We all know that one verse in Galatians: “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Galatians 5:14. Yes, yes, we know it. But how often do we really do that? We likely follow that command a negligible amount. We’re good at loving those that we are friends with, or that we are related to, but what about loving those that are different from us? That is where Night to Shine comes in.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Night to Shine, it is a prom hosted once a year for people with special needs ages 14 and over. It was the brainchild of the Tim Tebow Foundation and has been held in different places all over the country, all over the world, in fact, since 2015. It has grown exponentially since its first night until now. In 2015 there were 15,000 volunteers and 7,000 guests. In 2018 there 175,000 volunteers and 90,000 guests! What a wonderful way to love those that don’t typically get the love and attention they deserve!
Night to Shine is an opportunity [for the special needs community] to feel like a king or queen for the night. It is a night specifically planned out for the special needs community. ~Tammy Zoerhof, Treasure Coast Night to Shine Coordinator
So how do you get involved with this wonderful opportunity here on the Treasure Coast? Genesis Community Church in Fort Pierce hosts the event every year. I had the opportunity to speak with Tammy Zoerhof, who is the Treasure Coast Night to Shine Coordinator, she also happens to be the pastor’s wife at Genesis. She had this to say about Night to Shine’s impact on the special needs community: “Night to Shine is an opportunity [for the special needs community] to feel like a king or queen for the night. It is a night specifically planned out for the special needs community.”
There is only one problem. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the event, the churches that host the event need help fundraising. The Tim Tebow Foundation is simply not capable of supplying the funds necessary to host the prom, an average of $12,000 per prom, to each individual church. In 2018, 537 churches held a prom. With 537 proms and $12,000 per prom the cost really adds up. Therefore, churches — and particularly Genesis Community Church — have taken to fundraising. That’s where we come in.
On November 2, 2018 Genesis Community Church will be hosting a Night to Shine fundraiser in conjunction with Swig of Color. The event will be a ton of fun, as you will get the opportunity to paint a Christmas tree that says “Joy.” The event costs $40 per person, this includes all supplies necessary, a 12 x 16” canvas, hors d’oevres and beverages, and a template for the piece of art you will be making. It is suitable for ages 8 and up, so please come out and bring the family! If 100 people come, Treasure Coast Night to Shine gets 50% of the proceeds! The more people come, the more of the proceeds Treasure Coast Night to Shine gets to use towards their cause. So come on out to Genesis Community Church at 602 E Weatherbee Road, Fort Pierce, Florida, 34982, on November 2 for a fun time that benefits a worthy cause!
