Designing, creating and handcrafting, these are all gifts that God has given us. The ability and desire to think of something then create it is a trait that God has inspired in human beings! We paint pictures, build houses, write music, and so much more. Humans have the desire to create just as they were created; but just as much as we love to create we also need to have a purpose for what we create.
I think we all have that one crafty friend who takes macaroni necklaces to a whole new level; when you walk in their house it’s like Pinterest exploded. Their house is in various stages of DIY, with halfway finished projects scattered throughout every room. We can get so caught up in the creation process that we forget to honor God with our talents.
I know that I am not the only person who sees all this creativity, talent and ambition going to waste. The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea has a group of creative people who are using their talents and skills for kingdom work and blessing mariners at the Port of Palm Beach!
A few years ago, the Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea saw a need in their community and began to meet it with a group called the Nautical Knitters.
“The Nautical Knitters are a group of knitters who provide handmade watch caps and scarves for the Port Ministry.”
Whether you are a “professional” knitter who could put anyone’s grandmother to shame, or you are more like me and you enjoy giving new things a try, anyone is welcome and able to contribute. Christians have a community of believers at their fingertips and amazing things happen when Christians get together to do God’s work! All, including beginners, are welcome to attend. Whether you love to knit or you love to try new things, the Nautical Knitters of Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea are giving you the opportunity to live in community with fellow, like minded, believers. They are using their skills to provide for those in need making an impact in their community! Mariners can spend months, or even years, away from their families and without a church home.
The Nautical Knitters show the love of Christ by providing for the mariners’ physical needs, while other groups within the church provide for the spiritual needs. Knitted caps, care packages and holy communion are a few of the ways that Bethesda-by-the-Sea serves the mariners of Palm Beach.
Just like a true DIY-er you are probably considering the “how-to” aspect of getting involved. The Nautical Knitters meet every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in their church library located at 141 S Country Rd, Palm Beach, FL 33480.
This group does not have any registration or fees, and there is no age limit. Working with a community of like-minded people, using and growing your skills in order to give back to your community is an experience that I cannot put into words. If you are interested in attending the Nautical Knitters and using your skills to positively impact and bless your community, show up and try it out! Try something new to build your arsenal of abilities and do some kingdom work in the process!
